Annual Show 2022.

Saturday 10th September saw a successful return of the Club’s Annual Show. Following many weeks of preparations, and not a little trepidation. But after the lengthy and enforced absence, all went well.
The show was very well attended and provided members and non-members alike with an interesting and varied afternoon. Entries for the various classes steadily came in and the afternoon saw a steady flow of visitors. A successful tombola stall and an equally successful raffle added a little zest to the proceedings and it is great to be able to report that the club gained a number of new members on the day.
A big thank you to all who helped achieve that success. In particular thank you to all of our sponsors, to all who entered any of the many classes on offer, whether award winners or not, and to all who worked hard in the background before and during the event to ensure an afternoon to remember.

We now look forward to the resumption of our monthly meetings and presentations and of course, on the horizon, to next year’s Annual Show.
As previously, the show was held at our normal venue, the Methodist Church Hall. Just as a reminder given below are details of the many classes included in the show schedule. We now look forward to 2023 and our next Annual Show.

220 g Unsalted Butter
220 g Caster Sugar
220 g Self Raising Flour (sifted)
4 Eggs (beaten)
1 tsp Vanilla Extract
2 tbspn Milk (optional)
Filling
400ml Clotted Cream
100ml Double Cream
150g Raspberries
150g Blueberries
Raspberry Jam
Blueberry Jam
Equipment 3 x 20cm/8 inch cake tins, greased and lined
Method. Pre-heat oven 180C/Gas mark 4 Cream margarine and sugar, add vanilla extract. Gradually beat in eggs and fold in flour. Divide mixture between tins. Bake for 20-25 mins
Combine clotted and double creams in a bowl. If needed whisk by hand to form small peaks
Spread 1 sponge with blueberry jam followed by a layer of cream. Do not spread to edge as it may overflow when sponge 2 is added. Place sponge 2 on top, pressing until level. Spread with raspberry jam followed by cream. Place sponge 3 on top. Spread the remaining cream on top and decorate with fresh berries in the shape of the Union Jack.
Nb. Raspberries may be substituted with strawberries.

This is the first time that any British monarch has celebrated
a platinum jubilee. In her accesssion day message the Queen
said she ‘ hopes the Platinum Jubilee will bring together families,
friends, neighbours and communities’.

9th September 2023
Annual Show 2022 – Rules and Regulations:
1. The Show will be conducted in accordance with the Rules and Standards contained in R.H.S. Show handbooks, except where under this schedule these previously do not apply.
2. Entries and Fees All Classes are open, except for classes 14 and 22A. An entry fee of 30p per exhibit will be charged on all adult entries.
3. Entry Forms (together with fees) will be available and accepted at the Hall, on Friday, 7.30 pm to 9.00 pm, and on the day of the show, from 8.45 am, until 10.45 am.
4. Staging must be complete by 11.15 am, on Show Day, when the Hall and all rooms will be closed for judging.
5. Exhibits must bear a class card, obtainable from the Entry Table, placed class number uppermost.
Exhibitors to name all plants and flowers varieties where possible.
6. All Exhibits must be bona-fida products of the exhibitor. All horticultural exhibits must have been in the exhibitor’s cultivation for at least three months prior to the show.
7. Exhibits not conforming to the schedule will be disqualified.
8. The Judge’s decision is final.
9. The Committee is empowered to settle any disputes which may arise, and, for which these rules do not provide.
10. The Trophies remain the property of the Society.
Winners must return trophies to the Secretary, at least three weeks before the next Annual Show. The holder is responsible for the award, whilst it is in their possession.
11. Points will be awarded as follows:-
1st prize – 5 points
2nd prize – 3 points
3rd prize – 1 point
In the event of a tie, the Trophy, will be awarded to the exhibitor gaining the most first prizes. If still tied, then, second prizes etc.
12. Exhibitors may enter more than one exhibit in a class. However, only the best exhibit will qualify for a prize.
13. Exhibitors may use their own vases, bowls, plates etc. but there are Society vases available if required.
14. Prizes. If in the opinion of the judge, the exhibits in any class do not merit a prize, then, the judge shall have the power to withhold the prize or prizes.
15. Exhibits and Prize Cards must not be removed before 3.45 pm.
16. Trophies will be presented to the winners at 3.30pm.
Prizes may be collected from the Treasurer after 3.45pm.
17. Prize money not collected by 4.15 pm will be considered as a donation to the Society funds.
Any flower or vegetable exhibit not otherwise marked will be sold after the presentation of prizes.
“Not for Sale” tickets are available from the Entry Table.
The Society appreciated the gift of exhibits for sale.
PLANT AND PRODUCE SALE – 11TH SEPTEMBER 2021.
For precautionary and health and safety reasons the decision was taken not to hold an Annual Show in 2021.
However a PLANT AND PRODUCE SALE was held outdoors in the Cookridge Methodist Church Car Park on 11th September 2021 from 1.00.p.m. through to 3.00.p.m.
The sale involved 8 tables laid along the outside of the church in the L shape of the church building. Stalls included plants, garden tools, fruit, flowers and vegetables. In addition there were within the eight stalls one selling greetings cards and another selling chutneys, jams etc.
Although perhaps not the show we had hoped and planned for the sale still proved a great success with over £300 being raised during the afternoon.
